Despite the wet weather, the building project is progressing well. The renovated library has been in use for several weeks now. The new mezzanine classroom spaces and reading room have been positively received by both staff and students. A number of other purpose-built facilities, including the Whare Wanunga, English Department, Performing Arts area and Science department are expected to be in use once the finishing touches are completed. The upgrading of cladding, windows and doors has commenced at the front of the June Clark Centre. Work continues on the new hard courts.

The Hawkes Bay Opera House pulsed with the sound of song and dance during the Hawkes Bay Secondary Schools’ Kapa Haka Championships held on 18 May. This year’s competition was the biggest ever. The group performed extremely well but were unplaced. Sharlena Maui was both humbled and pleased to be placed second in the Kaitataki Wahine (lead female) section.
James Fulford, Year 11, continues his fine run of shooting results. As part of the Hawkes Bay team, James competed in the Douglas Rosebowl, an important regional inter-club competition. James distinguished himself by shooting one the few “possibles” (perfect scores) in one of the events on the day. The Hawkes Bay team won the Gunn Cup for skeet shooting.
Three Year 10 Karamu students spent some of the last school holidays in New Plymouth representing Hawkes Bay at a basketball tournament. Kaleel Spooner and Maia Wati-Cooper played in the Hawkes Bay Under 17 Girls’ team, which was placed 3rd in the tournament. Bodie Smiler played in the Under 17 Boys’ team. This team was placed 2nd. All three will be attending the Nationals over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
Stanley Chilton, Year 9, won the Junior Boys’ Standard Grade Championship at the North Island Secondary Schools’ Orienteering competition, held in Taupo on 29 April.
