Curriculum

All students study  the  essential learning areas described in the New Zealand Curriculum, including English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health, the Arts, Technology.  Maori and Japanese are offered and encouraged but are not compulsory.

Year 9 and 10 students select from a range of options offered from the Arts, Technology and Languages.

Year 9 Courses

Students study the four core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health.

Select 8 one term option subjects:

Year 10 Courses

Students study the four core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health.

Students select 4 half year option subjects:

Year 11 Courses (NCEA Level One)

Students need to take six subjects at this level of which English, Mathematics and Science are compulsory. Students will choose three other option subjects.

Subject descriptions and  prerequisites are listed in the Curriculum handbook. Deans and subject teachers will advise students on the most appropriate course for their individual needs.

Students should choose subjects that:

Year 12 Courses (NCEA Level Two)

Students in Year 12 must choose English and five other subjects. Students will be advised by their teachers and Deans to the best English course to be studied at this level.

There are prerequisites for entry to studying subjects at NCEA Level 2 which are clearly outlined in the Year 12 Course book. Many subjects require a certain number of credits to have been gained in specific Achievement Standards to guarantee entry into a Level 2 course.  Students who do not meet the criteria need to have approval from their Dean and the HOD of the subject.

All Year 12 students will have an interview with their Dean after they received their NCEA results to confirm their course.

Year 13 Courses (NCEA Level Three)

Year 13 students may choose any five subjects.

The school provides a wide range of option subjects. More details of these are available in the Year 13 Course book. Many students use this year to gain entry requirements for University or other Tertiary Institutions. It is important to check entry criteria for  University or other Tertiary institution  before choosing Year 13 subjects.
